Summary:

Swanston Golf Course was built on the enthusiam and commitment of Miss Margaret carswell who, in 1927 aquired the lease to the land and began layong out a 9 hole course (which she extended to 18 the following year).
In 2005 the course secured the major investment needed to totally remodel the course. Further, adjoining land was aquired and seven new holes were added and a new 18 made from these seven plus 11 from the original course. As part of this investment a new 'short 9-hole' course was added to give Swanston an additional facility.
Today the course is a well designed and well maintained parkland course which has achieved the design objective of being capable of challenging the most accomplished of golfers without being too daunting to the less gifted player.

I joined Swanston earlier in the summer and have played there pretty much every week since! The club is going through a transitional phase at the moment, with six new holes opening for play in the Spring of 2009 and alterations to the existing layout too. A new 9 hole short course also opened this year, with full USGA spec greens, and there is a 350 yard driving range, practice greens/bunkers and a practice putting green. Over £2 million has been invested in the courses and clubhouse and the facilities are absolutely first class. Indeed, membership of the club has increased from only 281 in 2005, to a present 750 odd!! In summary, a very friendly club with a good mix of members, a very clued up management team and excellent facilities.
