Summary:
Musselburgh Old Course situated on Musselburgh Links (within Musselburgh Race Course), and opened in 1672, is officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest surviving golf course.
Although only a 9 hole course Musselburgh played host to six Open Championships (1874 –1889) before the competition was moved to Muirfield.
Musselburgh's other contrinution to golfing history is the size of the modern golf hole - the four and a quarter inch diameter hole which became standard during the 19th century was the size of hole implemented by Musselburgh Old Course. The reason for the seemingly odd size - nothing more scientific than it happened to be the width of the implement used to cut the holes at Musselburgh and in 1893 the R & A made the size mandatory.
