Summary:

St mellion International Hotel, Golf & Country Club is part of the Crown Group (32 golf clubs). With its two championship golf courses, this famous West Country golf resort has hosted the Benson & Hedges International on six occasions, firmly securing St Mellion's position as the finest venue for golf in Cornwall and as one of Europe's premier resorts for both golf and leisure. St Mellion is not simply just about golf, whether it is a Wedding, Private Function, Conference, Dinner in one of our Restaurants, treating yourself to a beauty treatment or getting fit in our Health Club St Mellion is worth an experience! The Nicklaus Course, officially opened in the July of 1988, is regarded as one of the finest golf courses in Europe. Jack Nicklaus has designed many golf courses, however St Mellion’s Nicklaus Course in Cornwall was the first golf course he designed in the UK. Jack’s signature is all over this incredible course – high tees with good views of the fairways, water hazards and the requirement to place the ball in the right position in order to score well. Once opened Nicklaus gave the course his highest compliment: “I knew it was going to be good, but not this good – its everything I had hoped for and more… St Mellion is potentially the finest golf course in Europe”. At just over 7,000 yards from the tournament tees and 6,000 yards from the medal tees, the Nicklaus Course provides a truly outstanding test of golf for people of all abilities. Each hole from the 1st to the 18th provides its own unique test, with character and beauty, as a golfer whilst enjoying a round on the Nicklaus Course there really would not be a place you would rather be playing! The Old Course is a championship golf course in its own right. It was opened in 1976 and at 6,000 yards, has many holes which will test the very best golfer. The long par 4 third will require 2 accurate shots to reach the green in regulation where bunkers are ideally placed to catch both your tee shot and approach. The twelfth is the most picturesque of the par three’s with the lake being quite intimidating to the nervous player – however, to hit the green is most satisfying. The Old Course finishes with the fantastic par 4 eighteenth which provides a fitting end to a memorable 18 holes. The Old Course is a delightful course with wonderful scenery, and extremely popular with both members and visitors of all handicaps alike.

This is the "flagship" venue of the Crown empire. There are 2 courses - Kernow (the hotel course) and Nicklaus (the championship course where the pro's are due to return in 2011). Great value at £0 for us Crown members! The Nicklaus is fabulous but a brute - narrow undulating fairways, thick rough on steep surrounds, plentiful water hazards and tricky greens. The Kernow is currently being redeveloped so suffering from a preponderance of par 3s and some temporary tees/greens - it should be finished by next summer.
