Summary:

Monte Rei is a large luxury golf holiday resort set in the hills northeast of Tavira in the Eastern Algarve.

Luxury is a byword for this development, whilst the centrepiece of the resort is the only Jack Nicklaus designed 'Signature' course in Portugal, the rest of the resort is similarly impressive with a super clubhouse dominating proceedings, luxury golf villas, bars, restaurants and numerous leisure activities available. Plus the position of the resort means that you are treated to fantastic views of the Sierra do Caldeirao mountains and the Atlantic Ocean almost at every turn.

The Jack Nicklaus designed 'Signature' course is a 6,600 metre, Par 72 Championship course which, in typical Nicklaus fashion, is a truly unique design with elevated tees, doglegs, deep, deep bunkers and water coming into play on eleven of the eighteen holes. With no weak holes the course features an enjoyable series of eight par-4s, five par-3s and five par-5s in a challenging and distinctive layout.

Strangely tucked away a bit in the hills by the Spanish border, but everything about this set up screams quality. The clubhouse, the practice facilities, the course are all superb. It's a bit pricey at €190 per person (inc buggy) but it is definitely worth the money just for the experience. Oh, by the way, unless you're very straight off the tee you'll need a few extra balls!

Can you recall visiting Vilamoura 1/Quinta or San Lorenzo in the 90's ? Well you can experience it and more at Monte Rei today with service and style in abundance. This IS Portugal's best course by a stretch, check it out. Get there early and enjoy the Grill (ask for Nuno, Portugal's top wine waiter, have him open a bottle for lunch, paid by your 4 ball winner !). The practice facilities and Paulo's welcome are legendary use them and have your shoes re-studded while you have breakfast. After some deep breathing get to the fist tee and hit your drive confidently over the trees, saving 50 yards ! The course is stunning, just wait til you see hole 3, relax and enjoy there is no dud hole. What's to loose the winner buys the wine ! It will test your bunker game, your chipping and really reward your putting technique as the greens are usually perfect and fast. You'll get some 3 shots off your UK handicap. Wow what an experience and worth every penny.

One of the best courses I've played and one of the best golfing experiences as well.. The service is exceptional, the clubhouse amazing and the views breath taking. What a start. Then you get to the course. I've played lots of top courses but this one is special. The view from the 1st tee is spectacular (and they keep getting better), the course is immaculately maintained, greens are fantastic, every hole a different layout and different challenge. The price is high, but worth every cent (we got a discount via a local agent)
