Summary:

The Quinta do Lago golfing holidays resort is an exclusive golf and residential development set on the Algarve next to the equally exclusive Vale do Lobo estate.

The resort, founded in 1971, is spread across nearly 2,000 acres of beautiful, verdant orchards, countryside and pine forests bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Ria Formosa National Park.

The Quinta do Lago estate offers all that you would expect from such a high class resort, numerous golf villas for rental, a hotel, swimming pools, bars, restaurants, a fabulous beach area, tennis courts, football and three top quality, championship length 18 hole golf courses – the Quinta do Lago North Golf Course, the Quinta do Lago South Golf Course and the Laranjal Golf Course. All fantastically designed to make the most from the beautiful natural terrain, all built and maintained to the highest standards and the North & South Courses rated amongst the best in Europe.

Quinta do Lago North Golf Course, the shortest of the three courses, was the original golf course at Quinta do Lago. The original course was designed by William Mitchell (USA) in 1974 but the middle part of the course was ‘taken’ to form the heart of the Quinta do Lago South Golf Course development in 1989. As a consequence Quinta do Lago North has holes 1 to 5 and 15 to 18 designed by William Mitchell and holes 6 to 14 designed by Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquerome, both from the USA. The course is laid out over terrain typical of the Ria Formosa National Park ie sandy, well drained and littered with umbrella pines. In the spring the rough is covered with a visually beautiful blanket of wild flowers, heather and gorse. The Fairways are laid with Bermuda hybrid which provides year-round play and the greens are sown with Creeping Bentgrass Penncross, giving a fast, true putting surface. Although very testing Quinta do Lago North is regarded as one of the best on the Algarve and will prove a worthy challenge to even the best golfers.

Quinta do Lago South Golf Course was created in 1989 by taking holes 6 to 14 from the original North Course and developing new holes to form holes 1 to 5 and 15 to 18. This course is laid out on undulating sandy land closer to the sea than the North course and, being longer, favours the long hitter. But with lakes in play on several holes it requires skill as well as length to score well. As a consequence the course is often used to host the Portuguese Open. Interestingly, although the front and back nines are both anti-clockwise loops, the first nine favours players who are able to draw the ball whilst the second nine favours a player who is able to fade the ball!

The Laranjal Golf Course is the latest edition to Quinta do Lago. This course is laid out across what were cork and orange droves. It is long with narrow, tree lined fairways, well guarded greens and water often in play. With fairways of Bermuda Grass and greens of Penn A4 grass the course is playable year round and it offers a fantastic challenge for the golfer who prefers a course which demands accuracy.

All courses are always superbly maintained and the Quinta do Lago estate offers everything you could require for luxury golfing holidays.

Managed to play the South course at Quinta do Lago in March 2012. The clubhouse is impressive with a large terrace overlooking the putting green, 9th green and 1st hole. Food and drink were (as expected) a little expensive but very good. We were a two ball but got paired up on the tee (not a problem, he was a nice guy, had played the course several times before and a better golfer than us!). The course is very pretty with several elevated tees giving fantastic views across the surrounding land, big inviting fairways and large greens (some elevated). The course is lined by some of the biggest, most impressive villas I've ever seen (one villa ran the entire length of a 150 yard Par 3 !) but they were set far enough back that they didn't spoil the golf by making you worry you were going to possibly kill someone). The only niggle with the course (and we had been previously warned) is that on the fourth hole our uninterrupted golf came to a stop and thereafter turned into a very slow round (we caught up with a two ball behind 8 guys on a golf holiday playing as 2 fourballs and they were sloooow, with no intentions of letting anyone through and no marshall to 'encourage' them). In summary, Quinta do lago South course is a fantastic course, excellent condition, very pretty, very interesting holes and great views (which we had lots of time to admire over our 5 hours round!)

Played the Laranjal Golf Course, Quinta do Lago on a short golf break (March 2012). The clubhouse is small but the staff are very friendly and the food was excellent. The practice facilities are across the road and comprise a driving range, chipping and putting green which were good enough for me but not outstanding facilities. But the course, oh the course... Laranjal is the best golf course I have ever played. It's a long course laid out over lots of land, so no crowding in of the holes and, interestingly, there are no villas lining the course (so the sense of peace is uninterupted). It's reasonably flat/rolling land, so walking isn't a problem, and the views are fantastic. Every hole is different with water on play on several holes and the greens are huge, massively undulating and verrrry fast (on a 10 ft putt I managed to putt 20 foot past and off the green on one hole!). Laranjal golf course is expensive (€108) but it is fantastic (and the high price serves to keep the crowds away). So, if you can justify the cost, you should definitely try to play this one.

Great Championship Course, one of the best. Play it if you get the chance (although can be a slow round)
