Summary:

Penha Longa is a beautiful golf holiday resort set in the hills behind Estoril.

The resort offers accommodation, extensive golf practice facilities, the 9 hole Monastery Course, but the centrepiece of the resort is definitely the 18 hole, Par 72, Robert Trent Jones Jnr. designed Atlantic Course.

The Atlantic Course, justifiably ranked within the top 30 courses in Europe, is a challenging course with green rolling fairways, heavily wooded areas, lakes, numerous bunkers and large undulating greens, but the course also offers breathtaking views towards the ocean to the South and the Sintra hills to the North.

The quality of the Atlantic course is demonstrated by the fact that it has played host to numerous competitions including the Portuguese Open.

Of equal quality but of lesser a challenge is The Monastery Course – a 9 hole, Par 35 course of 2,588 metres.

Played here as part of a recent golf trip to Cascais and thought it was one of the best courses we played. Setting is lovely with the clubhouse set in the original monestry. Practice facilities were good (but set a bit away from the 1st tee). 1st tee was a bit daunting with the starter calling you forward but got off to a good start which calmed the nerves and the rest of the course is fantastic - I don't know how old the course is but it all looked very mature with big green rolling fairways and big well protected greens. Some water on the course but mainly the hazards are old stone walls, ancient trees and bunkers. All in excellent condition. The well stocked drinks buggy was a welcome sight. Definitely one to play if you get the chance.
