Summary:

Set on the very eastern edge of the Algarve (within minutes of the Spanish boder) Castro Marim is a luxury golf resort development.
Offer 27 holes arranged in 3 loops of 9 allows the course to offer massive variety.
Whilst all three 9-hole loops are good, the Terry Murray designed Atlantic Course is perhaps the most challenging and in typical Portuguese style the fairways are tree lined and the integration of lakes into the course and numerous strategically placed bunkers mean that the course always offer a challenge.
There are beautiful views of both the mountains and sea and, thanks to its underground irrigation system, the course is always well maintained.

Had lunch at spacious modern clubhouse on terrace overlooking course, lovely views, good food, and teed off at 13.05 and 13.10. No starter man on first tee to explain the course etc. No one behind us; not many in front (maybe two groups). Those who had not played there before struggled big time due to general difficulty of sudden dogleg turns and narrowness of fairway areas and rock terrain to sidehills. It was not an easy starter course; maybe best to play it on 3rd or 4th day if you are not playing regularly each week No mobile buggies on course selling food and drink. The greens were in good nick and fast (prob the fastest of the courses we played); course in pretty good shape generally However at about 4.30pm as dusk was arriving we all got bitten really badly by the mozzies, leaving us all week with large red blister marks on arms and legs; not nice at all. We finished at 5.50pm and last hole was difficult to see the balls as at 6.00pm it was pitch black. to avoid mozzies need to finish before 4.30pm so start needs to be 10.45 latest.
