Vilamoura Old Course, Algarve, Portugal

Vilamoura the Old Course is the second oldest course in the Algarve and has undeniably remained one of Portugal's finest courses.

Originally designed Frank Pennink and opened in 1969 the course was remodeled by Martin Hawtree in 1996, However, Hawtree retained the essential quality of the original Pennink design.

The fairways of the Vilamoura Old Course are wonderfully crafted, relatively tight and tree lined and meander across the gently undulating terrain making straight driving crucial (trees being the principal hazard on the course).

The tees are always beautifully kept, the fairways wonderfully maintained and the greens, although small by modern standards, immaculately maintained.

For the purist - Greens are of Bentgrass (variety Providence), the fairways are of Burmuda Tifton 419 (overseeded with Lollium Perenne) and the surrounds & rough are of Lollium Perenne.

In summary, Vilamoura the Old Course is immaculately maintained and a great course for golfers of any ability but demanding of consideration of shot placement to score well.
 
The 1996 remodelling also included the building of a lovely new clubhouse with all the facilities you would expect from a club of this standing.
 
Visitors are welcome but handicap certificate is required

Clubhouse with bars, restaurant, leisure facilities and pro shop offering club, trolley and buggy hire. Golf facilities include a driving range and putting green.
