The Quinta do Lago golfing holidays resort is an exclusive golf and residential development set on the Algarve next to the equally exclusive Vale do Lobo estate.
 
The resort, founded in 1971, is spread across nearly 2,000 acres of beautiful, verdant orchards, countryside and pine forests bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Ria Formosa National Park.

Quinta do Lago North Golf Course, the shortest of the three courses, was the original golf course at Quinta do Lago. The original course was designed by William Mitchell (USA) in 1974 but the middle part of the course was ‘taken’ to form the heart of the Quinta do Lago South Golf Course development in 1989. As a consequence Quinta do Lago North has holes 1 to 5 and 15 to 18 designed by William Mitchell and holes 6 to 14 designed by Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquerome, both from the USA. The course is laid out over terrain typical of the Ria Formosa National Park ie sandy, well drained and littered with umbrella pines. In the spring the rough is covered with a visually beautiful blanket of wild flowers, heather and gorse. The Fairways are laid with Bermuda hybrid which provides year-round play and the greens are sown with Creeping Bentgrass Penncross, giving a fast, true putting surface. Although very testing Quinta do Lago North is regarded as one of the best on the Algarve and will prove a worthy challenge to even the best golfers.
 
Quinta do Lago South Golf Course was created in 1989 by taking holes 6 to 14 from the original North Course and developing new holes to form holes 1 to 5 and 15 to 18. This course is laid out on undulating sandy land closer to the sea than the North course and, being longer, favours the long hitter. But with lakes in play on several holes it requires skill as well as length to score well. As a consequence the course is often used to host the Portuguese Open. Interestingly, although the front and back nines are both anti-clockwise loops, the first nine favours players who are able to draw the ball whilst the second nine favours a player who is able to fade the ball!
 
The Laranjal Golf Course is the latest edition to Quinta do Lago. This course is laid out across what were cork and orange droves. It is long with narrow, tree lined fairways, well guarded greens and water often in play. With fairways of Bermuda Grass and greens of Penn A4 grass the course is playable year round and it offers a fantastic challenge for the golfer who prefers a course which demands accuracy.
