Summary:

One of the oldest clubs in the world, Muirfield is also undoubtedly one of the most famous.
A fantastic test of golf, from the championship tees  the course is a formidable 7,034  yards and when you then add in the thick rough, cavernous bunkers (all 153 of them) and perhaps a stiff wind off the sea you can begin to understand why Henry Cotton called it ‘cruelly fair’. further accolades have come from Tom Watson who said there was ‘not a weak hole on the course’ and Jack Nicklaus who named his golf complex in Ohio, Muirfield Village, after it.
Founded in 1891, and the home of The Honourable Company of edinburgh Golfers, the original course was laid out by Old Tom Morris on the open fields between Gullane and the windswept coast of Eastern Scotland.  The course was substantially remodelled in 1936 and is largely the same today (with the exception of some smaller scale works conducted by Martin Hawtree in 2008).
Muirfield has played host to numerous major championships both amatuer and professional - 10 Amatuer Championships, 15 Open Championships, Ryder Cup and Curtis Cup. Plus it is scheduled to again host the Open in 2013.
