The Costa del Sol, the top holiday destination in Spain based on visitor numbers, is the 100 mile stretch of beautiful Mediterranean coastline centred around Malaga. It is blessed with a mild climate, lots of sunshine and a coastline of wide sweeping coves enclosed by cliffs seemingly each containing a fantastic beach.
Such natural advantages make it possible to enjoy the beaches and outdoor lifestyle year round, so it is not surprising that the Costa del Sol has been an international tourist destination since the 1960s.
The Costa del Sol became famous as a sun worshipper’s holiday destination with the development of the bustling tourist resort of Torremolinos in the 1960s. By the 1970s the surrounding towns of Benalmadena, Mijas and Fuengirola had grown into tourist destinations in their own right.
But just a few miles further down the coast another tourist boom was happening. Price Alfonso do Hohenlohe started the revolution of high quality golf tourism when he founded the Marbella Club. With his worldwide contacts Prince Alfonso attracted the international jet set to Marbella, from Aristocrats to film stars they came. Then José Banús began development of the marina and luxury resort which still bears his name. Puerto Banus today is somewhere you can stroll, eat or drink whilst looking out across a marina full of huge, very expensive yachts. José Banús then turned his attention to development of the land behind Puerto Banus into a huge playground of top golf courses.
Today the Costa del Sol is synonymous with Golf Holidays in Spain to such an extent that it is often referred to as the ‘Costa del Golf’ or ‘Golf Costa del Sol’.
