Introducing Spain...
Spain has long been a favourite for holiday makers and it’s not hard to see why. 1,000 miles of Mediterranean coastline, fantastic beaches, mountains, beautiful countryside, friendly people, a range of food and drink to suit all tastes and over 300 days of sunshine per year make it a superb holiday destination.
Add in a massive range of top class golf courses designed by the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus, Cabell B. Robinson, and a host of other world class designers, and Spain becomes not just a top holiday destination but also the most popular destination for Golfing Holidays.
Golf holidays in Spain offer a range and variety which is hard to beat. The widest range of golf courses, from 9 hole local tracks to world class resorts like La Cala Golf, La Manga Club and Le Torre Golf Resort all built especially for golfing holidays plus holiday accommodation ranging from budget apartments to luxury golf villas with private pools on a world class golf holidays resort.
Playing golf courses which offer panoramic views across stunning hills or down the beautiful coastline make for a memorable golf holiday experience. Whilst sunshine, beaches, bars, restaurants and friendly people make for a memorable holiday experience.
The geography of Spain…
The Spanish Mediterranean coastal areas are known as the administrative regions of Catalonia, Comunidad Valenciana, Murcia and Andalucia but they are better known by their holiday designation of ‘Costas’ (meaning ‘Coast’).
Catalonia has the Costa Brava and Costa Dorada
Comunidad Valenciana has the Costa del Azahar and Costa Blanca
Murcia has the Costa Calida
Andalucia has the Costa de Almeria, Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz
Golf holidays in Spain…
Virtually every area of Spain is recognised as a top holiday destination, but it is the Mediterranean coastal regions which have embraced the concept of Golf Holidays Spain most enthusiastically with top quality courses spread along all the Costas
However it is the areas of Murcia, Costa Almeria and the Costa del Sol which are perhaps the favourite destinations for golf holidays in Spain (with the Costa de la Luz coming up fast).
The Murcia region, backed by the magnificent Sierra del Puerto Mountains, is generally one of the driest areas in Spain. Together with excellent travel links provided by international airports at Alicante and Murcia this made Murcia the obvious place for development of large scale golfing holiday resorts. It started with the development of La Manga Club in 1980 and has continued with the addition of excellent golfing holiday resorts like La Torre Golf Resort, Mar Menor Golf Resort, El Valle Golf Resort and Roda Golf & Beach Resort.
Golfing holidays on the Costa Almeria tend to be concentrated around the beach town of Mojacar where you will find the fantastic golf resorts of Valle del Este and Desert Springs at prices noticeably less than those experienced elsewhere in Spain.
Golf Costa del Sol, or ‘Costa del Golf’ as it is often called, offers perhaps the best range of options for golf holidays in Spain. Well served by airports at Malaga and Gibraltar the Costa del Sol contains well known beach holiday resorts like Fuengirola, Marbella, Purto Banus and Estapona and over 50 golf courses ranging from good local tracks to world class resorts like La Cala Golf, with three championship class golf courses, Finca Cortesin Golf Resort (home to the Volvo World Matchplay Competition), Santa Clara Golf Marbella, San Roque, Club de Golf Valderrama, Sotogrande and numerous others.
When to go:
Golf Holidays in Spain are a year round affair but during the summer months the temperature can get very hot and so golf would be confined to the early morning or late afternoon. Typically the best season for golf holidays in Spain is September to May when the weather is usually sunny but cooler with some minor variations between the slightly drier Murcia region and the areas further south.
